Summer Arts Intensive 2026 Programs

Vocal Intensive 2026

Class examples:

Beginning Vocal Pedagogy (Grades 1–3)

Students participate in small group voice lessons focused on healthy warm-ups, breath support, and vocal technique. The class learns 1–2 songs in various genres, and students are encouraged to sing individually when comfortable.

Intermediate Vocal Pedagogy (Grades 4–7)

This small group voice class builds healthy vocal technique, including breath, posture, and alignment. Students receive individual feedback, learn one art song in another language, and prepare a “choice song” for auditions or festivals.

Advanced Vocal Pedagogy (Grades 8–12)

Designed for audition preparation, this small group class refines vocal technique and performance skills. Students receive individualized feedback and work in small ensembles on repertoire aligned with their developmental and audition goals.

Musicianship (Grades 1–5)

Students develop foundational music skills through reading, ear training, rhythm work, and singing games. Using a Kodály-based approach, students learn solfege and build strong melodic and rhythmic understanding.

Music Theory & Aural Skills 1 (Grades 6–8)

Students learn the fundamentals of music theory and ear training, including clefs, key signatures, rhythm, and simple meters. The class includes sight-singing, dictation, and deep listening to strengthen musical understanding.

Music Theory & Aural Skills 2 (Grades 9–12)

Building on foundational skills, students explore scales, modes, intervals, rhythm, chords, and basic analysis. Through sight-singing and ear training, they deepen their theoretical knowledge and musical fluency.

Strings Intensive 2026

Class examples:

Violin Studio (Grades 5–12)

Students participate in daily classes focused on developing violin technique and musicianship. Repertoire includes etudes, exercises, and solo works, with classes grouped by age and ability.

Viola Studio (Grades 5–12)

This daily class builds essential viola technique through focused exercises, etudes, and repertoire. Students are grouped by age and ability for targeted instruction.

Cello Studio (Grades 5–12)

Students refine cello technique and performance skills through daily study of exercises, etudes, and repertoire designed specifically for the instrument.

Bass Studio (Grades 5–12)

This daily class strengthens double bass technique and musicianship through focused exercises, etudes, and repertoire tailored to the instrument.

String Orchestra (Grades 5–12)

Students rehearse orchestral repertoire while developing ensemble skills and technique. The session culminates in a final performance.

Chamber Music – Strings (Grades 5–12)

Students perform in small ensembles such as duets, trios, or quartets, receiving coaching from experienced faculty. The class concludes with a chamber performance.

Instrumental Jazz Intensive

Class examples:

Small Jazz Ensemble (Grades 7–12)

Students perform in jazz combos while developing improvisation, arranging, and ensemble skills. Repertoire spans multiple jazz styles and eras, culminating in student performances. Open to all levels—no prior experience required.

Jazz Theory and Improvisation (Grades 7–12)

This hands-on class builds foundational improvisation skills through jazz repertoire and essential theory concepts, including blues forms, ii–V–I progressions, modal playing, and chord-scale theory. Students practice and perform on their chosen instrument. No prior experience required.

Jazz Styles and Repertoire (Grades 9–12)

Students explore diverse jazz styles through listening, analysis, rehearsal, and performance. The course deepens understanding of jazz history, phrasing, and improvisational approaches. Recommended for students with prior improvisation experience.

Dance Intensive

Class examples:

Dance Technique (Grades 3–6)

Students are introduced to modern dance through fun, focused movement inspired by ballet, jazz, yoga, and creative movement. The class builds strength, coordination, musicality, and body awareness while encouraging creative expression and confidence in the “whole dancer.”

Dance Composition (Grades 3–6)

Students explore how dances are created through guided improvisation and creative prompts. They learn to turn ideas and emotions into movement while building imagination, collaboration skills, and confidence as young choreographers.

Repertoire (Grades 3–6)

Students learn and rehearse an original dance for the final performance. The class emphasizes teamwork, musicality, focus, and expressive movement, culminating in a joyful ensemble performance.

Dance Technique (Grades 7–12)

Students engage in modern concert dance technique rooted in traditions such as Graham, Dunham, Limón, and Holm. Daily classes build strength, musicality, and dynamic range while connecting technical training to expressive performance.

Dance Composition (Grades 7–12)

Students explore the art of choreography through improvisation and structured creative studies. The course develops individual voice, collaborative feedback skills, and thoughtful artistic decision-making.

Repertoire (Grades 7–12)

Students rehearse an original work for performance, focusing on musicality, ensemble clarity, and performance quality. The class fosters collaboration, artistic ownership, and confident, expressive presentation.

Piano Intensive 2026

Dr. Irena Portenko will take 6 individual students (by audition only) to participate in the week-long intensive and will be teaching group piano classes.  Advanced students studying with Dr. Portenko will also get exposure as collaborative pianists, working with our vocal and instrumental ensembles.

All students will be able to take elective classes in musicianship, music theory, and aural skills.  Students at any level of playing may audition with the repertoire they have been working on. Students who are not chosen for one-on-one study with Dr. Portenko may participate in the program in a larger group setting.
